The benefits of skin-to-skin touch are widely acknowledged. Skin-to-skin care (SSC) is simply when a naked or diapered baby is laid on mom or dad's bare chest so that frontal body contact is skin-to-skin. Not that you need extra reasons to cuddle your baby, but science does prove that skin-to-skin care benefits babies and parents in the following ways:
The touch, gentle pressure, and warmth of skin-to-skin stimulates an oxytocin release in both parent and baby
Known as "the love hormone", oxytocin is proven to enhance bonding
Oxytocin release and cortisol reduction from SSC result in fewer depressive symptoms and greater stress reduction for mom
Oxytocin also helps the uterus contract (reducing excess bleeding) and warms the mother's body (comforting baby)
Moms that do SSC breastfeed longer and have a more positive experience
Possible reasons could include that it's easier for baby to find breast and latch early on, baby's touch stimulates letdown, and mom notices hunger cues sooner
Skin-to-skin heightens oxytocin and reduces cortisol in premature and full-term newborns, causing them to cry less, sleep better, regulate heart rate and temperature, and digest nutrients more easily
At the hospital: In a slightly reclined position, go skin-to-skin for at least an hour with your baby right after the umbilical cord is cut. If you choose to breastfeed, have your first nursing session during this skin-to-skin time.
For C-sections: If you're not able to do skin-to-skin right away, have your partner go skin-to-skin with your baby until you are able to.
For preemies: Ask NICU nurses to help you do skin-to-skin for as many hours possible; it is proven to help preterm babies thrive.
At home: Continue skin-to-skin at home as often as you can, such as during each nursing session. Infant massage is another great way to give your baby a lot of the benefits of touch, including an oxytocin release that promotes calmness and bonding.
Make sure baby's head is turned to the side for easy breathing and that you save skin-to-skin for times you won't fall asleep.
